Still Hoping for a Permanent Home
Sustainable Glasgow Executive Director, Brandi Button-Johnson, has been working alongside Wes Simpson and the Downtown Park Committee for the past 3 years to fill in the gaps of the City of Glasgow's Strategic Plan to bring a downtown park and multiuse facility to downtown Glasgow. The Bounty of the Barrens Farmers Market would be one of the community organizations that would use the multiuse facility to house the farmers market on Saturdays from 8AM-12PM. It would allow our market to operate year round in a permanent home. The market has operated without such a facility since 2009, and has worked tirelessly to secure such a place several times in the past with no success in the number one agricultural county in Kentucky in several categories. Bounty of the Barrens is the only KY Proud, producer only farmers market in Barren County that is registered with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the only market in Barren County that can accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program implements that allow those who are low income and considered senior citizens or on WIC to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables as well as the only market in Barren County that has a KY Double Dollars Program that doubles those implements for fresh fruits and vegetables.
The hope would be for this to be the answer to the our hopes and also a great place for other community organizations to hold their events. The location allows for traffic to continue to flow around the square, while at the same time encouraging pedestrians that attend events at the location to walk or cycle to the Downtown local businesses. It would allow access to the famers market for individuals who need accessibility services and help to encourage market traffic from those who are unable to walk on the terrain of the current location on the courthouse lawn.
